Final Round: Wirig Held Erdogdu to A Draw, Georgiadis’ Draw Enough for the Title and GM Norm |
In the final round of the 6th Mediterranean Championship, Erdoğdu forced against Wirig and was close to winning but in the end the French player hold while Georgiadis and Parligras drew, too. Ionnais Georgiadis of Greece had the better tie break in the end to claim the 2008 Mediterranean title while Wirig took the second place despite having 6.5 points as Georgaidis. 3-9. places were shared by Gurevich, Vocaturo, Parligras, Mohr, Aroshidze, Erdoğdu and Haznedaroğlu. Georgiadis scored a GM norm thanks to the strong field and the high number of grandmasters.
Congratulations to Vojinovic and to Georgiadis for claiming the title and gaining his first GM norm!

Round 8: Georgiadis and Wirig Still Leading |
|
Round 8 did not produce any change in the leaders since Parligras and Wirig drew as did Mohr and Georgiadis. Erdoğdu defeated Vocaturo to join the contention for the title while Gurevich made no nonsense against the 11-year old youngster Vahap Şanal. Georgiadis and Wirig still leads with 6 followed by Gurevich, Parligras, Erdoğdu and Mohr at 5.5. Detailed report below.

New Leaders With Two to Go: Wirig and Georgiadis |
|
With two round to go Vocaturo lost his unshared lead after losing against Georgiadis while Wirig joined the Greek international master after a swift win against Mikhail Gurevich who was far from his best play. The Turkish youngster Vahap Şanal won another game this time against Vojinovic and now has 4.5 points and 11-year-old is going to face the top player of his country, Gurevich in round 8.
